Influential Women in Uganda. #WomenMakingHistory

Last week we started the #WomenInHistory and you guys told us about some of the women that have been influential in your lives in all aspects of life be it Sports, entertainment and politics. The Coach of the Gazelles, Uganda’s national basketball team Miss Mavita Ali was mentioned is among the ladies who were mentioned on that tag. Below we add some ladies that we know are influencing other women in Uganda in no particular order;

Mrs. Janet Museveni:

You cannot mention influential women in Uganda and you do need hear the name, Janet Museveni. The lady is a driving force of its own, unlike most First ladies who are comfortable rallying behind their men and doing small charities here and there, kissing sick babies all over the world. Mrs. Museveni took the bull by the horns and joined politics, she is a member of the August house, she represents Ruhama County in Ntugamo district at the same time she is the Minister for Karamoja affairs a post she has held since 2011. Mrs. Museveni has been married to Mr. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for 40 years and counting with whom she has 4 children, three daughters and one son.

HRH Nnabagereka Sylvia Naginda of Buganda:

It’s not a coincidence that she is always on the lists of most influential women in Uganda, apart from having a Masters in Corporate Communications the Queen of Buganda takes women and youth empowerment has her priority, she has so many projects all over Uganda that stem from educating the girl child to creating more developmental activities for the rural women.  Most of her projects have been under the Nnabagereka Development Foundation which she started in 2000, it’s no wonder that most young women in Uganda to be just like her.

Flavia Tumusiime:

Flavia is a beautiful lady that has been in the media industry since her teens, she started out as a child prodigy on a Teens show on one of Uganda’s broadcasting networks, the later moved to radio where so many doors opened for her. If you were to ask some of the young ladies in Uganda who want to/ are in the entertainment world, who they want to be like, Flavia Tumusiime’s name will always pop up. She has achieved so much at a young age; she is also an MC, a TV host an actress and not forgetting a voice over artist.

Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga:

Mrs. Kadaga is the first ever elected woman Speaker of Parliament in the history of Uganda, a post she has held since 2011 at the same time she sis the women’s representative for Kamuli district .


The speaker is a Lawyer by profession and has also served as a Secretary General of the East African Women’s Parliamentarians Association.

Winnie Byanyima: She is an activist, a diplomat and Mr. Kizza Byesigye’s wife, Mrs. Winnie is the first female Aeronautical Engineer in Uganda and is currently the Executive Director of Oxfam International.

Juliana Kanyomozi:

A beautiful and very talented woman, Juliana is not only the epitome of a Ugandan diva but among one of the most influential musicians in the country. Formerly of the I-Jay fame with Iryn Namubiru, Juliana found success when she went solo which led to so many collaborations with the then major artists at that time. Currently, Juliana is one of the judges of the talent show “Tusker Project Fame” and still making hit singles every year.

Esther Kalenzi:

A Young lady that started something small which has gone on to inspire more young people around Kampala to do more than they think they can. She is the founder of a nonprofit organization called 40Days 40Smiles which has used social media to rally young Ugandans to get more involved in charity through activity filled events that raise money for orphans.

Jennifer Musisi: Musisi as she is commonly known all over Uganda, is the Executive Director of the Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) a job that has sky rocketed her into the highest corridors of power in the country. Mrs. Musisi has made a lot of effort in raising the standards of Kampala as a city through implementing new regulations and improvements.

Aamito Lagum:

Miss Aamito is a young model who started out in Uganda but ended up winning the first cycle of Africa’s Next Top Model a spin off show of America’s Next TopModel where she won 50, 000USDs and a lucrative modeling contract with a New York based. Aamito has inspired so many young models in Uganda and all over the continent in the fashion world.

Irene Ntale:

She came on the scene as a young husky voiced lady with her single “Eno Ye Sawa” and then coupled up with more songs that made Irene a house hold name all over Uganda. Irene Ntale is not only a singer but she writes and plays the guitar which she usually plays on most of her live performances; she is signed to Swangz Avenue.

There are so many wonderful women around us in all corners of the country that are doing so much more than we can ever repay them for and they inspire all over us in what they do, be it politics, music, fashion and many things we cannot mention them all because they are too many. Our Mothers, sisters, wives and friends we are humbled to have you in our lives.
