Yesterday Monday the 9th was Heroes Day
in Uganda and to the joy of so many working class citizens, the best Monday ever, since it rained all day and there was no need to wake up and rush to office. To you all who went to work yesterday morning, bambi, you will be fine.
Ok, so it was that day when we celebrate our Nation’s heroes, but if you ask a lot of these dot com kids what the day was all about, they will not even know what to tell you (other than those who will be quick enough to Google) because they actually don’t know what heroes we are celebrating. Since we do not teach History here, we will kindly refer you to the nearest book store (We cannot write “LOL” in a serious article!) Everyone has their own version of who a hero is supposed to be, there are those people that do
simple but great things which people do not notice around. We asked a couple of people who their heroes are and it is amazing the answers you can get.
One person said his Hero is his beautiful Mother who has raised him and made him who he is, the other one said his girlfriend was his hero.
A hero does not only have to be the person who fights wars in the Sudan or Congo or the Middle East (we love and appreciate you our brave soldiers). It is those people that do things which impact us positively in our lives. Those ladies and men who wake up at 3am to sweep the streets of Kampala to give you guys a clean city, the Nursery and Primary teachers who taught us the basics in learning and gave us our first shaky steps into education, that single parent struggling every day to make ends meet for the family, that security guard who protects your property like his life depends on it while you are peacefully sleeping, that person who helps Kids cross the road in this selfish city, the housekeeper who cooks your food and does not try to poison you even if you make the Guinness book of record’s worst boss in the world, the boda guys who take drunk half naked girls home safely without attempting anything on them, that doctor working overtime to save lives, the rolex guy who feeds broke campusers every day when things are tight and finally that person who created the internet, yes that is our hero because he gave us a chance to easily connect to the rest of the world with just a click.
The fact is, everyone has their own hero and they might not make sense to you in a hero sense but we should always appreciate such people even if they might never notice that you appreciate them.
To our soldiers, our fallen heroes, and God rest your souls for all the wars you fought for us to have a peaceful Uganda. Who is a hero to you?
