The Mighty HASHTAG!!

By emasaba 11 years ago

The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages and to make it easier on others to access a certain topic all over the site.

Now if you understand social media well enough, you would know why most people use these tags. Some users certainly just plant them there without thinking about it but the weight these symbols carry is quite heavy, they are the reason thousands of people get to make a certain 140 character or picture post trend.

Hashtags are used to start topics on social media platforms especially on twitter, the more interesting the tag, the trendier the topic and just because it started it does not mean, it will not break your topic.

So how does one use it for Digital Marketing on all those platforms or sites? If you’re not a big social media user, you might not be familiar with the term or the concept of hashtags, let alone know how to use hashtags in your social media marketing. Even so, you’ve probably noticed these signs (#) used in a topic or keywords on everything from tweets to the bottom of your TV screen during popular programs.

  • Always include the most relevant hashtags in your post.
  • Make sure you create your hashtag that you can always use consistently on your posts on every social media platform

The moment you post something without hashtags that you want several people to see even if you have enough followers, it will have a small reach and likes but compare that to a post that has several relevant tags all through it.

A post that has been tagged can be easily seen by a person several miles away from you just by searching one of the tags that you used and the more the tags, the merrier.

Obviously your post is going to look crowded because of the tags but your sole reason of posting was to give the post a certain reach but that does not mean you fill the whole post with tags, it will not make sense to the others. Do not just throw in tags randomly, especially tags that are not in any way related to the post, always make sure that every tag you use has some relevance and attachment to your post.

FYI, tags do not make your post interesting if it is not, the least it will do for you is give it viewership but do not expect people to like it, the worst case scenario is people finding it funny or silly and making it viral for the wrong reasons, always make sure your content is good and relevant enough.

Hashtags do not only work on Instagram, Twitter and the rest but on blog sites too, when you have a good article and you want to enhance its reach. Throw in some tags of the keywords used in the piece, it might not be much but it will boost more than when the post has no tags.

Now go on ahead and #BeVisible.
